TOGA!!! TOGA!!!!!

I admit to a fondness for really bad B movies, films made in the 60’s, featuring Roman gods, mythical creatures and toga clad men rowing to nowhere…the other day while cleaning, one of my favorite childhood films, “Jason and the Argonauts” came on, I hadn’t seen in it years, so I was glued to the television. It’s a seriously horrible film but the draping in that movie is pure inspiration!

What did the ancient Greeks and Romans sleep in, after all they had Somnus, the Roman god of sleep and Morpheus (his son) the Roman god of dreams. The Greeks were also into the nocturne, Hypnos, son of Nyx (goddess of Night) was the Greek god of sleep?

From all the art depicting that period of time it seems they walked around in their pajamas, does that mean they slept naked? Or did they sleep in sheer versions of the daytime togas, or just shorter versions of the daytime togas? Did they simply remove all the gold armor and jewelry and go to sleep?

My theory is the women slept in little cropped tops and skorts, similar to what we now call a cami and tap set. It was probably very light and sheer and billowy and they would not remove it when they woke, but layer over it their daytime “wrap dress” …as for the men, they probably slept in “baggy boxers”, same as now! Some things never change.
